An acquaintance called me last week - the owner of an online store of industrial oils and lubricants. The voice is tired, a little irritated. “Oleg, we’ve been working with an SEO agency for three months, paying them one hundred thousand a month, but our positions are not growing. They send reports, some tables, graphs - but nothing changes. Maybe SEO doesn’t work for our niche at all?” I asked for a link to the site and did a quick audit. Do you know what I saw? Of the 16,000 product cards, 9,000 had an empty description - just a name and price. For 4,000 products, the title and description were duplicated because someone once set up a template in Yoast and never returned to it. Alt texts for images? About 80% of the pictures did not have them. Internal links between products? Zero. Structured data? Only the basic Product schema that WooCommerce generates out of the box, and that one with errors. And these guys pay one hundred thousand a month to an agency that deals with “strategy” and the “semantic core”, but does not touch the foundation - the product cards themselves.
I don't tell this story to shame anyone. This is an absolutely typical situation. I've seen dozens of WooCommerce stores, and the problem is the same everywhere - the technical SEO of product cards is in a catastrophic state, and the owners don't even know about it. They spend money on links, content marketing, contextual advertising - but do not notice that their product pages, which should bring organic traffic, are simply not optimized. And it's not a matter of laziness or stupidity. It's a matter of scale. When you have 500 products, you can sit down and manually write meta tags, descriptions, alt texts. When there are 5,000 or 15,000 products, it is physically impossible to do this by hand. We need automation, and we need a tool that doesn’t just “check SEO,” but actually finds problems and helps fix them. This is exactly the tool we have built into COS WP Woo, and this is what I want to talk about.
But before we delve into the features and capabilities, let's figure out why product card SEO is even important. Not in theory, but in practice, with numbers and examples.
When I started working with e-commerce projects, I naively believed that the main thing in online store SEO was categories. Optimize the category page for “hydraulic oil”, “motor oil 5W-30”, “transmission oil” - and the traffic will flow. This is partly true - categories attract a lot of traffic. But here's what I noticed in practice. Product pages add up to three to five times more organic traffic than categories. Why? Because users are looking for specific things. Not “motor oil”, but “Shell Helix HX8 5W-30 4 liters price”. Not “hydraulic oil”, but “VMGZ-45 pour point characteristics”. These are long tail, low-frequency queries, but there are a huge number of them in total. And each product card is a potential entry point for such a request. But only if it is optimized. If the card has an empty description, a template title “Product - buy in an online store,” no alt texts for the pictures and no structured data, the search engine simply does not understand what this page is about and does not show it in the search results.
I conducted an experiment on one of our projects - a store with 12,000 products. We took the 500 most visited cards and optimized them: we wrote unique meta tags, added detailed descriptions, added alt texts, and implemented FAQ blocks with structured data. After three months, organic traffic to those 500 pages increased by 47%. Not the entire site - just these pages. The conversion also increased because the descriptions became more informative, but that’s a different story. The question is how to scale this approach across the entire catalogue. Manually? With 12,000 products, this is a six-month job for two content managers. And by the time they finish the last card, the first ones will already be out of date - the assortment is updated. This is where the conversation about automation begins.
What exactly breaks in cards and why no one notices it
Let me tell you about the typical problems that we find when auditing WooCommerce stores. Not abstractly, but specifically - what exactly is wrong and what it leads to. I systematized these observations for a long time, and in the end we identified more than fifteen criteria by which the auditor at COS WP Woo checks each card. But to understand the scale of the disaster, it is enough to look at the key ones.
The first and most painful problem is empty or too short descriptions. WooCommerce allows you to create a product without any description at all - just a name, price, picture. And many do this, especially when importing from 1C or an ERP system. The product arrived with an article number, price and name “Hydraulic oil VMGZ-45 canister 20 l” - and that’s it, that seems to be enough. But for a search engine this is not a page, but a stub. Google and Yandex see 50 words of text on a page and decide that the content here is uninformative. Thin content is a direct signal for a decrease in search results. We set a minimum limit of 300 words for a product description, and this is still a soft threshold. Ideally, 500-800 words with technical characteristics, scope, advantages. Our auditor scans each card and marks those where the description is shorter than the threshold. But he doesn’t just flag—he prioritizes. A card with 5,000 views per month and an empty description receives critical priority. A card with 10 views is low. Because resources are always limited, and you need to fix what will give the maximum effect.
The second problem is duplication of meta tags. Title and meta description are what the user sees in search results. This is your showcase, your first impression. And you know what I see in most stores? Template like “%%title%% | Buy in the store %%sitename%%". As a result, thousands of pages have titles that differ only in the name of the product, but the meta description is generally the same - either empty or “Buy %%title%% at a favorable price with delivery throughout Russia.” Search engines see this and regard it as duplicates. Not complete duplicate pages, of course, but duplicate meta content is a signal of low quality. The auditor in COS WP Woo finds all such matches, groups them and shows how many pages have an identical title or description. Then you can either regenerate the meta tags through AI - and then each card will receive a unique title, taking into account the key characteristics of the product - or correct the template if the problem is systemic.
The third problem is the lack of alt texts for images. This is my personal “favorite” nightmare. On an average WooCommerce store, there are three to five images per product. With 10,000 products, this is 30,000-50,000 images. And how many of them have alt text? According to my statistics - 15-25%. The rest are empty. And alt text is not only about accessibility (although it is also about it). This is about Google Images, which can provide significant traffic in product niches. When someone searches for “what does a Shell Helix HX8 canister look like,” Google shows pictures. If your image has meaningful alt text, it will be included in the search results. If alt is empty - no. We have created a separate bulk process for generating alt texts in COS WP Woo. Not template, but using AI - the model analyzes the product name, category, attributes and generates meaningful alt-text for each image. “Canister of Shell Helix HX8 5W-30 synthetic motor oil 4 liters” instead of an empty alt or, even worse, alt="image-1234". The process is batch - you launch it, it goes through the entire directory through the Action Scheduler, without loading the server, and writes alt-texts in batches.
Separately, I would like to dwell on how AI generation of alt texts works in practice, because there are nuances here that are rarely talked about. The naive approach is to take the product name and insert it into the alt. You will get “VMGZ-45” for all five pictures of one product. This is bad - alt texts should be different for different images. Our AI looks not only at the product name, but also at the order of the image in the gallery. The first image is usually the main photo of the product, and the alt describes the entire product: “Canister of hydraulic oil VMGZ-45 with a volume of 20 liters.” The second is often a close-up of the label, and the alt reflects this: “VMGZ-45 oil label with technical characteristics and tolerances.” Third, there may be a photo of the product in the context of use or packaging in the warehouse. AI takes these patterns into account and generates varied, informative alt texts. Of course, it doesn’t “see” the image - it works with the context (title, category, position in the gallery, attributes). But for product photos that follow standard patterns, this is enough 90% of the time. For the remaining 10%, the content manager can edit the alt text manually - the auditor will tell you which images received automatic alt texts and where to check them.
The fourth problem is the lack of internal links. This is something that many people don’t think about at all in the context of product cards. There are categories, there is navigation, there are “Similar Products” - isn’t that enough? No, not enough. Contextual links in the description text are on a completely different level. When in the description of VMGZ-45 oil there is a link “for hydraulic systems operating at temperatures down to -45°C, IGP-30 oil is also suitable” - this is both useful for the user and for the search engine it is a signal of thematic relatedness of the pages. PageRank flows through internal links, and the more meaningful connections between products, the better the entire catalog feels. But who will manually place links in the descriptions of 10,000 products? That's right, no one. Therefore, COS WP Woo has InternalLinkingService - a service that analyzes the catalog and automatically finds contextual connections between products. He looks at categories, attributes, compatibility, textual similarity of descriptions - and places links. Not blindly, not according to the template “insert three links in each description,” but meaningfully, taking into account the context.
And the fifth, but not the last problem is the lack of structured data beyond the basic Product schema. WooCommerce out of the box generates JSON-LD markup for the product: name, price, availability, rating. This is good, but this is the minimum. But FAQ schema, HowTo, Review - this is not the case. And this is a missed opportunity. When a product has a FAQ block with three to five questions and answers, marked up as FAQPage schema, the search engine can show the rich snippet directly in the results. Your result takes up more space, gets more attention, gets more clicks. CTR can increase by 20-30% simply due to an extended snippet. We have built in automatic FAQ generation for each product - AI, based on characteristics and descriptions, formulates typical customer questions and provides answers to them. “At what temperature can VMGZ-45 be used?”, “What is the difference between VMGZ-45 and VMGZ-60?”, “What volume of canister should I choose to change the oil in the hydraulic system?” - questions that people actually ask. And all this is automatically marked with JSON-LD and appears on the product page.
I want to add one more point about the FAQ. We noticed that FAQ blocks not only improve SEO due to rich snippets, they also reduce the burden on technical support. When the product page already contains answers to typical questions - “What is the shelf life of VMGZ-45 oil?”, “Is it possible to mix VMGZ-45 with VMGZ-60?”, “Which GOST regulates the production of VMGZ?” — buyers find answers themselves, without contacting managers by phone or chat. On one of our projects, after implementing FAQ blocks on the 500 most popular cards, the number of calls to support on technical issues decreased by 22% in the first month. This is not the main purpose of the FAQ, of course, but a nice bonus. FAQPage structured data is also a signal for voice assistants. When a user asks Alice or Google Assistant “at what temperature does VMGZ-45 freeze?” — it is the FAQ schema that provides the answer. And if your store is the first with this answer, you get both voice traffic and brand awareness.
Dashboard: when there is a lot of data, prioritization is needed
Do you know what happens when you run an SEO audit on a store with 15,000 products? You get a list of 15,000 lines with problems. And if each product has three or four problems, that’s 50,000-60,000 records. Looking at a table like this is like trying to drink from a fire hose. Your eyes widen, your hands give up, and you close the tab with the thought “I’ll figure it out later.” This “later” usually does not come.
We went through this pain ourselves when we built the auditor. The first version looked like this - a table with all the problems, sorted by type. Technically correct, absolutely useless in practice. Because it’s not clear what to grab onto. Fix 9,000 empty descriptions? Or first 4,000 duplicate titles? Or start with alt texts? Without prioritization, an audit turns into a paralyzing document.
So we made a Dashboard that works differently. It doesn't just show problems - it ranks them by business impact. The algorithm is simple but effective: we take traffic data for each page (from Google Analytics or Yandex.Metrica, if connected), multiply it by the “weight” of the problem (an empty description weighs more than a short alt text) and get a priority score. A page with 3,000 views per month and an empty description ranks higher in the list than a page with 50 views and a duplicate title. This seems obvious, but I haven't seen any WordPress SEO plugin that does this out of the box.
The Dashboard shows the overall picture: how many cards are in the “green zone” (all criteria have been passed), how many are in the “yellow” zone (there are comments, but not critical), how many are in the “red” zone (serious problems). There is filtering by type of problem, by product category, by priority. You can select all products with an empty description in the “Hydraulic Oils” category in one click and launch mass generation on them through AI. Or select all products without alt-texts in images and run batch processing. Or find all pages with duplicate titles and regenerate meta tags.
I often hear the objection: “We already use Yoast SEO, there is an audit there too.” Yes, Yoast shows a traffic light - green, yellow, red - for each page. But it shows this on the edit page of a specific product. To see the big picture, you need to open each product individually. With 15,000 products - good luck. Yoast Premium has an upload, but it gives you a CSV file, which you then need to work with in Excel. Rank Math is a little better - it has an SEO Score column in the product list, you can sort it. But there is no traffic prioritization and there is no way to fix problems en masse directly from the interface. In COS WP Woo, an audit is not a report, but a working tool. You see a problem, you press a button, the problem is fixed. Not “download the CSV, give it to the content manager, wait a week,” but “click, fixed, next.”
Another point that many people miss is that audits should be regular. SEO optimization of cards is not a one-time action “conducted an audit, fixed everything, forgot.” The assortment is updated, new products arrive from 1C, someone creates a card in a hurry, forgetting about the description. A month later you again have 500 unoptimized pages. If a new product is created without a description, it immediately falls into the “red zone”. It's like real-time site health monitoring rather than an annual health checkup.
SEO metabox: real-time analysis right in the editor
Separately, I would like to tell you about the SEO metabox, which we built directly into the product editor. This is an addition to the Dashboard - while the Dashboard shows the overall picture, the metabox works with a specific card. When a content manager opens a product for editing, in the sidebar he sees a full SEO analysis: an assessment of text readability, checking keywords, the status of meta tags, the presence of alt texts in images, the status of internal links, the presence of a FAQ block. Everything is in real time - you write the text, and the analysis is updated as you type.
ReadabilityService, our readability analysis service, checks text based on several parameters. Average sentence length (optimally - 15-20 words), the proportion of complex words, the presence of subheadings in long texts, the length of paragraphs. This is an adaptation of the Flesch-Kincaid methodology for the Russian language, with adjustments for the specifics of commercial texts. We do not require that the description of industrial oils read like a children's book - technical terms are inevitable. But if the average length of a sentence is 45 words and the entire text is one wall without paragraphs, the service will highlight this.
In addition, ReadabilityService evaluates the “density” of the text - the ratio of unique words to the total number. Too high a repetition density indicates that the text is “watery”; the same phrases are repeated in different words. Too low - the text may be overloaded with terms and difficult to understand. The service automatically suggests the optimal balance, and the content manager sees specific recommendations: “Simplify the sentence in the third paragraph - 52 words, it is recommended to split it into two” or “Add a subheading after the sixth paragraph - a block of text longer than 400 words without visual division.” We tested this approach on real product descriptions in the industrial lubricants niche, and noticed an interesting pattern: descriptions that went through ReadabilityService and modified according to its recommendations showed a 12-18% better dwell time indicator - the time that the user spends on the page. And dwell time, as we know, is one of the behavioral factors that both Google and Yandex take into account when ranking.
Keyword analysis works like this: you specify the target keyword for the card (or it is pulled up automatically from the Yoast/Rank Math settings, if they are installed), and the metabox checks whether it appears in the title, in the meta description, in the H1 header, in the first paragraph of the description, in the alt text of the main image, in the product URL. These are basic SEO checks, but it's surprising how often a keyword is in the title but not in the description. Or vice versa - it’s in the description, but the title is template. The metabox shows a clear checklist - what has been done, what has not - and the content manager can fix problems right on the spot, without switching between tabs.
To be fair, the concept of an SEO metabox is not new—Yoast and Rank Math do exactly the same thing. But there is a fundamental difference. Yoast and Rank Math are separate plugins that only deal with SEO. COS WP Woo is a unified ecosystem. The SEO metabox is integrated with an auditor, with AI generation, with InternalLinkingService, and with a FAQ generator. You see in the metabox that there is no FAQ block - you press the button, AI generates the FAQ, the block appears on the page, the metabox updates the analysis, the Dashboard updates the card status. Everything in one place, no switching, no export-import, no “install this plugin for internal linking.”
And here I want to talk about the elephant in the room - the comparison with Yoast SEO and Rank Math. Because anyone who thinks about SEO for WordPress, the first thing they will ask is: “Why do I need your module if there is Yoast?” It's a fair question, and I'm not going to pretend that Yoast is a bad product. Yoast SEO is a great plugin that has set the standard for on-page SEO in WordPress. Rank Math is a worthy competitor with a more aggressive approach to functionality in the free version. Both work, both solve their problems. But both are designed for universal WordPress - blogs, corporate sites, media projects. For them, WooCommerce is “another type of content” and not the main focus.
Specific difference? Yoast SEO Premium costs €99 per year. Rank Math Pro - $59/year. For this money you get SEO analysis of individual pages, meta tag management, XML sitemap, basic redirects, social meta tags. This is a good set. But you DO NOT get: mass audit with traffic prioritization, AI generation of descriptions and meta tags, automatic generation of FAQs with structured data, batch generation of alt-texts, automatic internal linking based on catalog analysis. For all this, you need either three to five more plugins (Link Whisper for linking - $77 per year, Schema Pro for structured data - $79, ImageSEO for alt texts - 49 euros, plus some kind of AI plugin for content generation - another $30-100 per month), or hire an SEO specialist who will do it manually. In COS WP Woo, all this is built into a single SEO module, which works in conjunction with other plugin modules.
Redirects, sitemap and technical details that decide everything
I deliberately left this topic for later, although many would start with it. 301/302 redirects and an XML sitemap are basic SEO hygiene, without which everything else is pointless. But the problem is that these things are usually set up once and forgotten. And then, a year later, it turns out that the sitemap contains 500 pages with a 404 status because the products were removed from the catalog, and the sitemap does not know about it. Or that when the category was renamed, a redirect was not created, and a thousand pages lost their accumulated PageRank.
Managing redirects in COS WP Woo is a separate page in the admin panel, without the need to go into .htaccess or nginx configs. You create a rule: old URL → new URL, redirect type (301 - permanent, 302 - temporary), and you're done. Sounds simple, but the devil is in the details. We've added a few things that most redirect plugins don't have. The first is automatic detection of 404 errors. When a user or bot lands on a non-existent page, the system logs this URL. In the admin panel you see a list of all 404s with the number of hits. The most frequent ones means that there are links to them somewhere, and they need to be redirected first. The second is support for regex patterns. If you changed the category URL structure from /product-category/masla/gidravlicheskie/ to /catalog/masla/gidravlicheskie/, you do not need to create a separate redirect for each subcategory - one regex rule will cover everything. Third - chains of redirects. The system warns if a new redirect creates a chain (A → B → C) and offers to shorten it to a direct one (A → C). Chains slow down indexing and “lose” part of the link juice at each step.
An XML sitemap is another thing that seems trivial, but has nuances in the context of a large WooCommerce store. WooCommerce and WordPress generate sitemaps out of the box (as of WP 5.5). Yoast and Rank Math generate their own, more advanced versions. But they all use standard priorities and refresh rates for all pages. In COS WP Woo, we have made customizable priorities by content type and by category. Products in the "Promotions" category receive priority 0.9 and changefreq daily. Products in the archived “Discontinued” category receive 0.3 and monthly. Pages that consistently generate traffic are automatically given higher priority. This is not rocket science, but these are important details that affect the speed and quality of indexing.
Separately, it is worth mentioning social meta tags - Open Graph and Twitter Card. When someone shares a link to your product on Telegram, VKontakte or Facebook, what do they see? If OG tags are not configured, just a URL or, at best, the title of the page. If configured correctly - a beautiful card with an image, name, price and description. This does not directly affect SEO, but CTR on social networks and instant messengers. In COS WP Woo social meta is generated automatically for each product based on its data: title, main image, short description, price. If the product is on sale, information about the discount is added to the OG description. All this without any action from the content manager - the plugin does this automatically based on WooCommerce data.
And since we're talking about technical details, a few words about performance. One of the main complaints about SEO plugins is that they slow down the site. Yoast SEO, for example, generates a rather heavy JSON-LD block and adds its scripts to the frontend. Rank Math does the same thing. When you have both (yes, I have seen this more than once) - the page weighs 50-100 KB more than necessary. We approached it differently. SEO analysis in COS WP Woo works only in the admin panel - there are no additional scripts for auditing on the front end. JSON-LD is generated minimal and clean - only what search engines need, without duplication. Social meta is just a few meta tags in the head, a kilobyte at most. Redirects are processed at the PHP level before WordPress loads - this is faster than .htaccess and significantly faster than plugins that load the entire WordPress stack before making a 301 redirect.
How it works in practice: the story of one store
I want to tell a story that illustrates the entire process from audit to result. This is a real project, although I will change the details slightly for privacy. Industrial lubricants store, about 16,000 products, traffic - about 2,000 unique items per day from organics. Not a little, but not what it should be with such a catalog. The owner felt that the site was “underdeveloped”, but did not understand what exactly the problem was.
We installed COS WP Woo and ran a full audit. The results were predictable, but no less impressive in terms of scale. Of the 16,000 cards, 9,200 had descriptions shorter than 100 words. Of these, 4,700 have no description at all, only the name and price. 11,000 cards had a template title generated by Yoast using the mask “%%title%% - buy in %%sitename%%”. Meta description was empty for 13,500 cards - Yoast took the first 160 characters of the description, but there was no description. Alt texts were missing for 38,000 images out of 48,000. There were zero internal links in the descriptions. FAQ blocks - zero. Structured data - just the basic Product schema from WooCommerce. The overall SEO-health score is 23 out of 100. A disaster.
We developed an action plan, breaking the work into stages. The first stage is meta tags. We launched mass generation of unique titles and meta descriptions through AI. The model received the product name, category, key attributes (viscosity, volume, manufacturer) and generated a unique title 50-60 characters long and description 130-155 characters long. 16,000 meta tags were generated in one evening - a batch process via Action Scheduler, no server load, no site downtime. The content manager checked a sample of 200 pieces in the morning, made five edits, and approved them. The second stage is descriptions. Here we started with priority cards - those that were already receiving traffic, but had empty descriptions. There were about 800 of these. AI generated descriptions of 300-500 words, using data about the product from the catalog: characteristics, scope of application, tolerances and specifications, advantages over analogues. The third stage is alt texts. The batch process went through 38,000 images in two days. Fourth - FAQ. For each product, the AI generated three to five questions and answers, all automatically tagged with JSON-LD. Fifth - internal linking. InternalLinkingService analyzed the catalog and placed contextual links in the descriptions.
Results after three months? Organic traffic increased by 34%. Not 200%, not ten times - let's be honest, miracles don't happen. But 34% growth on a site that had previously stagnated for two years is a significant result. In absolute numbers - plus 700 uniques per day. With an average conversion of 2.1% and an average receipt of 4,500 rubles, this is approximately 14-15 additional orders per day. 450 orders per month. Calculate the revenue yourself. And this is without increasing the advertising budget, without buying links, without any cunning manipulations - simply by putting in order what was already on the site.
SEO-health score increased from 23 to 78 in the first month of work (after massive corrections) and to 89 after three months (after updating the content according to the auditor’s recommendations). The number of pages in the “red zone” was reduced from 14,200 to 1,100 - the remainder required manual work (specific products for which AI could not generate an adequate description without expert input). The number of indexed pages in Google increased by 40% - previously the search engine simply ignored thousands of thin pages, now they have begun to appear in the index.
I deliberately do not list specific positions here for specific requests - that would be dishonest, because positions depend on many factors, not just card optimization. But I will say this: the share of long-tail traffic (queries of three or more words) increased from 45% to 67%. This means that the site began to catch more specific, transactional requests - exactly those for which people actually buy. “VMGZ-45 oil canister 20 liters price” is a request with a clear intent to buy, and it is precisely such requests that began to drive traffic to optimized cards.
Now let's talk about something that many SEOs miss when working with WooCommerce - how the technical SEO of cards relates to the overall catalog architecture. I thought for a long time whether it was worth raising this topic, but decided that it was worth it, because without this understanding, even perfectly optimized cards will work at half capacity.
The fact is that WooCommerce generates a huge number of service URLs, which store owners are often unaware of. Pagination pages for each category. Filtering pages with parameters in the URL. Attachment pages for each uploaded image. Tag pages. Attribute pages. With 16,000 products, the total number of URLs on the site could easily reach 100,000 - and most of them provide no value to search engines. This bloats the index, erodes the crawling budget (the number of pages that a search bot is willing to crawl in one visit), and as a result, important pages - your product cards - are indexed more slowly and worse.
The XML sitemap in COS WP Woo takes this issue into account. We do not include attachment pages, pagination pages, or parametric URL filters in the map. Only significant pages - products, categories, information pages, blog articles. Moreover, for each page in the map, the correct canonical URL, the correct lastmod (the date the content was last modified, and not the date of the last save - these are different things), the correct priority and changefreq are indicated. You can exclude certain categories from the map - for example, “Discontinued” or “Archive”. You can add additional URLs that are not present in WordPress - for example, pages from external systems.
I’ll return to the topic of internal linking, because I want to explain how exactly the InternalLinkingService works - it’s not just “insert links at random.” The algorithm consists of several stages. First, the service analyzes the catalog and builds a graph of connections between products. Relationships are determined by several criteria: general category, common attributes (for example, one viscosity or one manufacturer), textual similarity of descriptions (TF-IDF or embedding-based, depending on the settings), direct replacements and analogues (if this information is in the catalog). Next, three to seven most relevant connections are selected for each product.
